About problems of optics. (The first czech translations of two letters, which were changed between B. Spinoza and G. W. Leibniz in autumn 1675.)

Martin Hemelík

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):4-12 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.439

In the frame of this paper are published the first czech translations of two letters, which were changed between B. Spinoza and G. W. Leibniz in autumn 1675. The content of letters which were constituent components of the comprehensive, but not preserved correspondence, are some questions from the sphere of laws of optics. Both philosophers paid big attention to these problems.

Wittgenstein on forms of life: a short introduction

Philip Tonner

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):13-18 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.440

This paper is an introductory exploration of the notion of 'forms of life' in the later philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. The notion of 'forms of life' is central to understanding Wittgenstein's later philosophy. Even though this is the case, there have been a variety of interpretations of this notion in the literature on Wittgenstein's thought. In part this is due to Wittgenstein's infrequent reference to 'forms of life'. The term 'form of life' only appears five times in the Philosophical Investigations, the central text of Wittgenstein's later philosophy. It is a point of debate whether the notion of 'forms of life' commits Wittgenstein...

Problems of Introspection

Michael Doležal

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):19-29 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.441

This study discusses the first chapter of Filip Tvrdý's book, Nesnáze introspekce("The Trouble with Introspection", 2015). In his book, Filip Tvrdý presents critical arguments against introspection, that serve him in his implicit defence of methodological naturalism. The aim of this study is to show that the problems of introspection are deeper-rooted than Tvrdý assumes in his book and that his implicit defence of methodological naturalism contains many weak points.

Should Europe be explored? The Philosophy of Euroscepticism

Lukáš Novotný, Hynek Tippelt

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):30-43 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.442

The present study explores the possibility of a philosophical interpretation of eurosceptical position in the current political discussion on the European Union. In outline it introduces the roots of european philosophical sceptical tradition and its rebirth by selected personalities of early modern thought. It searches relevant philosophical motifs, useful in understanding of the demands of eurosceptical movements and parties, and their analogies in the standpoints which we hear in current political debates. With the help of classical sceptical theory the paper offers a redefinition of possible approaches to the problematics of the european integration...

Justice For Sale

Joseph Grcic

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):44-52 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.449

The judicial system is essential for resolving disputes peacefully, reducing conflict and maintaining social order. It is a system established by a political and legal structure which, if rational and legitimate, operates in such a manner which coheres with the basic societal structure and produces reasoned decisions by judges who apply the law to the relevant facts of the case. A rational society, which must include a rational judiciary, is one which must choose the most efficient means to achieve its ends, here assumed to be that of a representative democracy similar to that outlined by John Rawls and others. These necessary means to achieve these...

Synesthesia and Virtual Art

Zdeňka Špiclová

E-LOGOS 2017, 24(1):53-65 | DOI: 10.18267/j.e-logos.446

The aim of this study is to proof the hypothesis that virtual art may be considered to be a provider of a specific form of synesthetic experience and that weak synesthesia serve as a basis for artistic practice. These assumptions are based on the thought that synesthetic experience evoked by a piece of art (especially by multisenzoric installations, but not only by those) and experience of a synesthetes are connected by one basic element, which is creating new connections between the senses, evoking and stimulation of one of these senses by acting on another - therefore their cooperation. Based on the analysis of the practical examples of current virtual...
